Certificate – Digital Transformation
Become an Expert for the Digital Transformation of Tomorrow!
In the digital transformation era, systems interconnect all “things” – physical objects, digital technology, and humans. These systems provide intelligent services by effectively using masses of data. We call them “smart ecosystems.” Examples include smart health, eEnergy, eGovernment, mobility, and autonomous driving. All these smart ecosystems require a set of competences including internet media, big data, cloud services, smart devices, Internet of things, and blockchain. These smart ecosystems do not only support our lives, but often change them drastically.

PROCEDURE, SUBJECTS TO COVER
Since the summer semester of 2020 Master students of the following departments at the Rheinland-Pfälzische Technische Universität Kaiserslautern-Landau can certify their broad knowledge of “Digital Transformation” via an additional certificate “Digital Transformation”:
- Electrical and Computer Engineering
- Computer Science
- Mechanical and Process Engineering
- Business Studies and Economics
This opens the doors to excellent employment opportunities with innovative companies in the region as well as nationally and internationally.
Companies are looking more and more for university graduates with expertise in the context of ecosystems. This is true for companies across all sectors, including automotive, health and energy.
Kaiserslautern is becoming one of the world’s recognized centers for digital transformation due to its expertise in all relevant competence areas:
- Engineering (physical world)
- Computer Science & IT (digital world)
- Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning (analyzing and interpreting masses of data)
- Economics & Social Sciences (establishing new business models/ethics)
Graduates of Rheinland-Pfälzische Technische Universität Kaiserslautern-Landau (RPTU) should be prepared for the future challenges of a “smart ecosystem” world by combining their main focus areas, such as engineering, computer science, or economics, with competence in at least two additional related areas. For example, computer science students should also understand topics from engineering and economy & social sciences.
In order to acquire die additional certificate “Digital Transformation” you must be registered as a Master’s student of one of the following departments at the Rheinland-Pfälzische Technische Universität Kaiserslautern-Landau:
- Electrical and Computer Engineering
- Computer Science
- Mechanical and Process Engineering
- Business Studies and Economics
The Credit Points of passed classes can be used to fulfil the requirements of your Master’s programme and can – at the same time – contribute to the required amount of Credit Points for the certificate “Digital Transformation”. The certificate is obtained upon completion of the Master’s degree and issued separately.
The certificate “Digital Transformation” is targeted towards Master’s students of RPTU in the specialization phase. They set priorities in at least three of the following four competence areas:
- Engineering (physical world): min. 3 to max. 9 CP
- Computer Science & IT (digital world): min. 3 to max. 9 CP
- Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning (analyzing and interpreting masses of data): min. 3 to max. 9 CP
- Economics & Social Sciences (establishing new business models/ethics): min. 3 to max. 9 CP
In addition to their main area of study, students must choose classes (between 3 and 9 credits) from at least two more competence areas.
A total of 20 Credit Points must be obtained with classes from at least three of these four areas. Each selected area must be covered with at least 3 Credit Points. A single class may not exceed the maximum amount of 9 Credit Points.
Additionally, one of four courses in the Business Studies and Economics Department or in the Social Sciences Department is compulsory for all participants. You have to choose one of these modules:
- “Entrepreneurship und Digitales Management” (Wiwi)
- “Gründungsprojekt” (Wiwi)
- "Gründungsmarketing" (Wiwi)
- “Elektronic Markets” (Wiwi) or
- “Computer Science and Ethics” (Sowi).
That means, the competence area Economics & Social Sciences is compulsory for the students from the departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science and Mechanical and Process Engineering.
Each participating department offers a catalogue of master’s courses, from which the students can choose their classes. Currently, there are more than 80 classes offered. You can find the list of courses in the Modulhandbuch of RPTU as Modulpools. The Modulpools for the certificate Digital Transformation include “SIAK-DT” in their names
